To complete the two-year Ultimate Black Belt Test (UBBT) it’s not enough to do 52,000 pushups, 52,000 crunches, 1,000 miles of walking or running, and 1,000 hours of sparring. No, to finish California-based teacher Tom Callos’s life-altering martial arts regimen,

    Jeff Brinker

Jeff Brinker’s students are amazing. Curious, attentive, practiced, humorous, adventurous, inventive, and most importantly, appreciative of their school and their instructor.

These were the kind of students that made my job pretty easy. But then I would expect no less from the students of Jeff’s Silent River Kung Fu school.

Also on this trip I got to take a trip down memory lane. Several of Jeff’s students are into sport parachuting, which is what I used to do 45 years ago. I was taken to the local jump center to see all the advancements that have occurred since I used to stick it in the wind. Wow.

It’s much the same with the martial arts. There really is no comparison between what martial arts was, and what it is now. Today the skill level is higher, the curriculum broader and the students start younger.

Then there’s that whole service to the community thing. Unheard of 40 years ago. Now if a martial arts school doesn’t get involved in some sort of charity they’re not taken seriously.

Don’t we hang with the coolest people?
